Man Wants To Swap Decrepit Home For iPhone 6
« on: October 15, 2014, 12:33:05 am »
The owner of a decrepit house in Detroit says he is willing to swap his property for an iPhone 6.

The house has three bedrooms, basement and garden, but it is in poor state, with no front door and broken windows.

It has been on the market in the bankrupt city, but nobody has come forward to buy.

The home was initially listed for $5,000 (£3,100) then reduced to $3,000 (£1,800). Now the latest version of the Apple iPhone will do.

Real estate agent Larry Else told Fox News: "My client is overseas and he told me he would be willing to trade the property for an iPhone 6.

"It sounds to me like he wants the (iPhone 6 Plus) version, but I think he's willing to negotiate."

Mr Else said another option would be a 32-gigabyte iPad.

However, any new owner would also have to pay some $6,000 (£3,700) worth of back taxes coming with the property.

Detroit, once the heart of the US auto industry, is seeking to end its historic bankruptcy under an $18bn debt deal.

It was the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history.

It'll be a whole lot more than just 6K, because the City will already be trying to force him to make repairs and replacements and renovations and alterations or they'll condemn the place anyways. The grand total is probably more along the lines of 20-30K for anyone who wants to make it habitable or a place of business and have it OK'd by the City. This owner got stuck with a mitt full of trouble.

Out of town land buyers are becoming a huge problem in Detroit. The don't care for the property or pay taxes just sit on them and wait for price to rise as the houses rot.

If you think Detroit officials would go to the effort to condemn a house, you're obviously not from around here. That would actually require them to get off their asses and do some work.

A few grand in back taxes will get you an honest to jebus mansion in the city. Or, if you sign up for the Detroit PD, they will give you a property for free. Of course, no one has taken them up on that...
I'll try anything once, and twice to be sure.

If I was living in the US and had pretty much nothing to live for I would be there in a flash with some mates to live it up

Pssh.. You can go to Zillow and look for houses in Detroit under $10k and come up with hundreds of listings. No one wants these places because like stated, mandatory repairs or property taxes.

Then again, Detroit is a great investment opportunity for someone. With the right amount of collateral (and it wouldnt even take much) and the proper legal guidance, one could possibly buy up a few of these properties.. enlist the help from some friends.. buy or rent some commercial moving trucks (for industrial or building materials).. go up to Detroit.. tear these places down saving all the good stuff.. Go back down south and sell the materials, auction them off.. take that money to reinvest and cover expenses.. and then essentially, you have prime already cleaned land in what was one of Americas biggest powerhouse cities. Some big rich investors will eventually try and revive Detroit, and if you have cleared prime space, you will probably make major bank on your investment, not including the short term profit of selling all that good building materials.. Just take some money, a little imagination, drive, and dedication.. but there are many ways to get rich.

I have bought and restored four house in Detroit. There are good areas and bad areas, you can still get some houses super cheap but they have large tax Leon's. Theylse are the ones bought from out of town investors that never check on property. While those of us how live in the city of Detroit all all live in 5/6 bedroom houses that we put work in to.
Those who come in and steal the old fireplaces doors and other pieces of the houses are no worse than the dope friends steal copper pipes. Talk shit if you want but three houses away from me is a house for sale for 65k with 6 bedrooms a pool and a ballroom.

Nah, I actually admire you for it. I think its a beautiful thing to preserve architecture and make use of old homes/buildings. Detroit used to be "The Motor City". I've never been there, but I think it would be a true testament to America if that city ever got a second chance to really thrive.. and I think it will as more and more like minded individuals realize this. Maybe as the market turns for the better, and if it manages to stay there... may be some hope.

Buying and restoring houses are the foundation of my economic future. I've only managed to successfully buy one so far, for use as my home and stable headquarters, but I plan on expanding.. hopefully in the immediate future. More than likely my next big real estate purchase will be land adjacent and adjoining to my own, but after that I'm turning my eye towards potential rental properties.

Would you happen to know how much property taxes generally run on one of those run down 4 bedroom, 2 story houses? Are we talking upwards of $600 a year? I'd still probably buy a house in Detroit even if I didnt get to visit it in the immediate future, just as an investment.. and I would accept ahead of time that it would probably be squatted in and stripped, if not already before purchase. I'll have some extra money in the next few months.. may look into it.. If you dont think its giving away too much information, what area has the cheapest houses without being the worst part of the ghetto? I'd probably look for something closer to an actual community center.. where there are gas stations or small stores and such.

If I had the money for an Iphone 6, I'd swap him.  Fuck paying the back taxes.  I wouldn't even go there either.  If it wasn't already a crack house, I'd post an ad on Craigslist inviting all crackheads to chill out in my new home.

They're greedy, but they're also incompetent. See, for example, how they're shutting people's water off for being $100 behind on the bill, but not doing anything about the geysers coming out of some of the abandoned properties, or going after the business that owe $30k.
I'll try anything once, and twice to be sure.
