SSB: Brawl with Dolphin and Project M
« on: August 14, 2014, 06:39:17 am »
Now, I bet a lot of you who have clicked on this topic are wondering just what the heck I'm talking about with the title. What I mean is running Super Smash Bros. Brawl with the mod, Project M on the Dolphin emulator. Now, you may be asking why one would need the mod. Well, just trust me. Without it, Brawl's gonna have some serious problems with its base gameplay and its character balance.

For example, unmodded, Brawl has random "tripping" where your character will literally trip randomly, leaving you completely open. Yes, it plays just as retarded as it sounds. Just one of the many, many things Project M fixes.

Anyway, what you will need:
- A halfway decent computer

My computer has a Core i5 4200M, Intel HD Graphics 4600, and 4 GB's of RAM and it can run Brawl at a smooth 60 FPS without any graphical sacrifices.

- A USB controller of some sort. Preferably an Xbox 360/One controller.
- ISO of Super Smash Bros. Brawl
- The Dolphin emulator installed
- Project M 3.02 (latest version as of this writing) Homebrew full set
- Project M 3.0.1 Full ISO Builder

Got all that? Good. Now, obviously make sure you have Dolphin installed first and configured with your controller properly. After that's done, make sure you also have the Brawl ISO. Then make sure your computer can actually run the game smoothly. If you can't run Brawl satisfactorily you can't Project M smoothly either. Period.

Now, there's two methods of running Project M with Brawl on the PC. You can either make a virtual SD card and run the game off that, which is prone to problems and will crash on you literally every 15-20 mins. unless you set your audio settings to a very specific setting which will make the audio lag behind and it's just a big huge mess. No. We're gonna do it by the other method. Loading up an ISO. Simple, efficient, and effective.

1. First, create an empty folder on your desktop and call it whatever you want and put your Brawl ISO in it.

2. Next, extract the contents of the 3.01 ISO builder folder, and the contents of the Project M Homebrew full set into the same folder.

3. Now run the Build_ISO v3.01.bat file.

4. A window should pop up. Press any key as it says.

5. Make your choices 1, 1, 2, 1. Then make sure you've chosen the right options.

6. Then just wait till it finishes. Also, if you get an error saying it can't find cygidn-11.dll, that's normal. Just hit OK and ignore it. The process should complete without any trouble.

-

OK, now you have everything you need to run Project M right now. Now, if the ISO builder finished correctly, you won't need your Brawl ISO anymore, so do whatever you want with it. Then simply move your Project M ISO somewhere. I just put it in the Dolphin folder in C:/Program Files/Dolphin/ Then, load up Dolphin and click “Browse”, and select the directory that contains the Project M ISO. You should then have "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" show up in your Dolphin main menu.

The only thing left is configuration now. Click the “Config” button in the Dolphin toolbar and under “General” uncheck “Enable Cheats.” Then under “Wii”, make sure that “Insert SD Card” is NOT checked. Now close the Config window. Click “Wiimote" in the Dolphin toolbar now and make sure there are no Wiimotes connected (just put “None” for all 4)

And there you go! Just load up your new ISO in the Dolphin window and you're ready to smash Peach's head in with your fists of fury. As always, let me know if you have any questions about this process. Oh, and don't worry about unlocking any stages or characters. Project M will have them all unlocked for you by default. Alright then. Happy smashing, everyone. I'm out.

Is this generally the standard procedure for installing games via the dolphin emulator? Could I use this same method for other iso's?
tl;dr: idealism will not un-rape you.

Good heavens, no. If you just wanted to play standard everyday Super Smash Bros. Brawl for example on your computer, then all you would have to do is simply setup the Dolphin emulator on it, get a copy of the ISO, and open it in Dolphin. Boom. Running.

The reason why this particular process is rather long is because we're modding the game very heavily and also need to make the whole thing an ISO as well.
