I have a bag like this one, combined with this one and lastly combined with this one.

I use all of those to pack in a bunch of things like:

- In the Cocoon Pouch I have my toiletries kit.
- In the Janus Extender I have a pocket fishing kit, "nice" lockpick set with a silcocks key and a gascap key.
- In the Monsoon Gearslinger I have a foam sleeping pad strapped to the bottom, along with a sleeping bag also strapped, two life straws, 6 Clif bars, two emergency blankets, my fire kit (Vaseline dipped cotton balls in a washed out aspirin bottles, flint and steel, 2 crappy bic lighters and a bag of dryer lint stuffed into a toilet paper roll,) one of these strapped to the outside of the bag, a Nagelene bottle, a map of my area, compass, entrenching tool, 3 rolls of compressed toilet paper, a cheap machete and change of clothes with multiple pairs of socks.

This is my car kit I've settled on considering I work in a place that doesn't like guns on the property.

I have a camel pack with all that strapping shit on the outside and enough spare room on the inside for a cooking kit stuffed with food, small fishing kit, other odds and ends, outside has a lot of shit strapped to it as well.

Basically cut my kit down to its minimal with what I'm comfortable with for about a weeks worth of provisions and possible hard sleeping depending on my location. I do have a pick kit in there as well so out buildings and the occasional factory or under ledge would get taken advantage of.

Basically all I'd be doing is making my way home.

Two large tarps
250 feet of twine still packaged in a very small container
a .357 caliber revolver and 50 rounds of ammunition
a .22 caliber survival rifle (http://www.impactguns.com/henry-arms-ar-7-survival-rifle-black-h002b-619835002006.aspx )
200 rounds of .22 LR
One full round of antibiotics
One full round of prescription painkillers
One bottle of NSAIDs
One pint of vodka
One tiny container stuffed to the brim with cotton balls doused with petroleum jelly
Flint and steel
Box of strike anywhere matches triple bagged, bag also contains a half dozen cheap lighters
A handful of  MREs and about three days worth of canned goods
A tiny container of bleach (just a drop or two can disinfect [generally speaking, after filtered and boiled...] gallons of water)
A fixed blade knife and a folding knife
Multitool
Three thermal blankets
One change of clothes with one extra pair of underwear and a hooded sweatshirt
2 compact LED flashlights (rated at 20 hours of light per battery set)
Replacement batteries (x2) and portable micro USB phone battery pack (4 charges on one battery pack)
Compass
One tiny ass pot, one tiny ass pan, two sets of silverware, one small metal bowl, one tiny ass roll of TP, a travel size toothbrush, and a bar of soap.
My favorite book and an old 8GB mp3 player with a pair of shit headphones (because morale matters more than you think...)
Collapsible fishing pole with two lures and a few different types of bait.
Temporary cell phone (not yet activated)

Overall, it fits on my back, and I can just about assure temporary survival in relative comfort.
You'd be surprised at how light and compact the bag is, too.
