Anime Fall 2014 Discussion Thread

What anime are you going to watch this season?
Mine will be:
  • FSN/UBW - Ufotable FSN adaptation looks really nice, I've watched the ova but they cut so many content, I hope this one will have a better pacing
  • Denki-Gai no Honya-san - I like the manga, another otaku-cenric slice of life but still manage to be enjoyable
  • Hitsugi no Chaika - The first season is great, I don't expect it to adapt well into anime but actually enjoyable, will definitely watch season 2
  • Kiseijuu - An old classic manga get adapted now for some reason. There are some irk like the different artstyle and character design but since this is kiseijuu this is an instant watch.
  • Log Horizon 2nd - Same reason as chaika

You can see the current season chart here: anichart.net/fall

Psycho-Pass 2

The hipster vibe was great and all during the first season while hipsterism was "hip", but I hope season 2 is less hipster.

Getting ready to start Steins Gate. Haven't yet finished season 2 of Code Geass.. really need to get around to that. Me and my Fiance are on season 11 of One Piece (don't judge me.. never expected to actually like this show).. And I've got Samurai Champloo on deck because I never finished the series when I was younger. Been contemplating getting Attack on Titan.. I know its on AS on weekends, but I had a friend who watched t before it was on american television (via subtitles) and he loved it.. so idk. Fiance also got some anime movie called "Paprika" today.. dont know what it is yet, let you know when I find out.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.

What was hipster about Psycho Pass? Do you just mean the fandom?

In any case I'm going to be watching season 2 as well. Others that look promising:
Denki-Gai no Honya-san - Looks interesting, I'm very rarely let down by slice of life
Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu - I predict I'm either going love it or hate it, which is my usual reaction to seinen anime. Description sounded kinda tacky but I've learned not to judge a book by it's cover
Mushishi Zoku Shou 2 - I'm going to try and blitz Mushishi over the next long weekend, I watched an episode or two but never finished even though I want to. If I'm successful with that then I'll pick this one up.
Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji - Looks like some good school drama fun. Description reminds me of Kare Kano which I really enjoyed.
Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso - I have a thing for music themed anime

So that's what, 6? Too much anime for me, I'll probably drop at least half after watching an episode or two but that's what I'll be checking out at least.

SnK has a dub? Huh, that seems quick, I thought is usually took ages to work out licensing.

I'm still disappointed that I started a few animes this summer only to find out there was no second season. Deadman Wonderland and Kaze no Stigma to name two.. Haven't checked in a while, but I'm pretty sure they're no plans to extend them.. or er, finish them.

Curious, do you watch mostly english dub, or do you go the subtitle route? a mix?

Yeah, the no second season thing happens a lot. I guess it's just what happens when anime is so frequently adapted from these long running mangas but comparatively so expensive to make. You can pick up the DMWL manga where the anime left off pretty well, that's what I did. There are a couple of characters that never appeared in the anime but you can either skim back through their plot lines or just roll with it.

As for subs vs. dubs, I'm not a dogmatist and I'll give a dub a shot if it exists but I find I generally prefer the subtitles. Part of it is that there's a fairly small pool of voice actors that get employed for english dubs so you end up hearing the same VAs doing very different characters and it throws me for a loop sometimes. The same is probably true for the original VAs, but I don't speak japanese so it's pretty rare that I'll recognize a voice.

Heh.. Yea I get ya. I've watched a few with subtitles, but honestly.. it's easier to listen and watch vs. reading and watching. During intense action scenes I'm either missing words, or having to pause because I get caught up watching. There is a certain depth or.. more genuine realism when hearing Japanese voices.. Some American VA's just don't seem to have that same depth to make me more enveloped in the show.

I've read my share of Manga.. the last one I started on was Monster, but never finished. I'll probably check out the DMWL manga though now that you've mentioned it.. that opening, gets me every time.. just awesome. I think the Manga may be better than the anime even if I havent seen it yet.. The anime started well, but just kinda rushed everything and expected the audience to be okay with it.. character depth and story is an animes lifeblood.

Finally got a free time to watch this season anime, and I have a really good impression on this season show.

Honya-San: Nice slice of life stuff, there's are some cringe worthy moment but overall it's a great show and gives a different vibes compared to another otaku slice of life anime.

FSN/UBW: Well, all I can say is ufotable delivers, although the pacing is a really bit slow earlier on but the rest is perfect, good animation style, good animation direction, and good fighting action moment. I really recommend this series to anyone. I can't wait for the next episode to be aired.

Steins;Gate is good, I love time travel series and it's one of the show that deal with it very well. Paprika is also another interesting movies, if I recall it deals with dream diving concept earlier than inception, I also like how it deals with it using more abstract moment. I haven't watched another anime movie for a while now, the most recent stuff I watched is Madoka rebellion.

On topic, do you have any plans of watching on this season anime?
Most of the stuff looks good, you should try watching one or two series this weekend.
