Legal

If it's illegal in your country to talk about legal proceedings online, could they charge you if you posted online from another country, using a website hosted in Iceland?

In theory I believe that since its posted and hosted in another country where it's not illegal to speak freely, then how can they arrest you when it did not take place in your own Country?

I would think that the jurisdiction would be based on where the offense actually occurred, meaning from what country is the computer located when you committed the offense.

For example, would someone get in trouble for possessing CP if their only copies were stored on a server or "cloud," and not locally? That could also be up for debate, but I would think that the person who owned the computer that uploaded the offending material would be guilty, with the jurisdiction being where the computer is located, even if the server is offshore in a country that allows the material.

I'm confused, which country was the one without rights? Or which one poses the threat of prosecution?

The UK is the country without rights and where it's illegal to talk about certain things, the character of my book travels out of England to. Germany, posts info which is hosted in Iceland (iceland respects freedom of speech) then he leaves the laptop in another country, it would be a cheap as throw away laptop.

What are the laws of Germany? I think that would be the determining factor and England wouldn't have a case, unless your character signed some kind of confidentiality agreement. If an agreement was signed, then the breach would have occurred in England even though the action took place in Germany. If it's just based on the law and no agreement, then I would believe the character is safe.

However, after writing that I'm starting to doubt myself. I remember hearing about some United States federal agents traveling to a country where prostitution is legal and got some hookers. Since prostitution is still a federal offense in the US, and they were citizens of the US and conducting official business, I believe they lost their jobs and were reprimanded.

Not sure if that would apply to just a citizen. Though I tend to remember hearing something that if a US citizen travelled to a country and had sexual relations with a minor, he or she would be prosecuted upon return home under US federal law. If that's the case, then that would refute everything I said above.

Again, I didn't research anything nor do I have any legal background. Just trying to logic through it. Good luck on writing your character for your book.

The country where the book is uploaded gives freedom of speech and of press so does the host site. I think this needs careful research on my watch, but where to start is unknown

You will most likely, if caught and it is illegal in your home country where you live, get in trouble.

Here in the US it is illegal to leave the country to do something that is illegal here legally in a different country for most things other than having a drink across the border in Canada or Mexico.. Such as having sex with a minor(even if it is legal where you go) and other stuff.

I never knew that.

So,  if I go from the US to Thailand and fuck a 10 year old, then go back to the US, go to my local police station and tell them that I just fucked a 10 year old in Thailand, they can arrest me?
