Post your faux pas
« on: September 06, 2014, 04:32:56 pm »
A coworker recently filed a claim on behalf of a young woman, and asked her relationship to the cardholder on her insurance, since it was also a woman's name and she was >25. The woman excitedly stated, "She's my partner!"  My coworker looked surprised (gay marriage is fairly new to IL). I thought she might be uncomfortable, so I made a joke with her when the patient had left, "You need to clarify with her, you should ask if one of them plays the guy's role."

I have a twisted sense of humor and enjoy off-color jokes; everyone who I work with knows this about me. But instead of laughing, she gave me a dirty look and said, "Zanick, did you know that my mother is gay? She married a woman two months ago." I tried to play it off like it was no biggie by pretending like I'd done nothing wrong: I said, "Really? That's wonderful, I have a lot of respect for the gay community!" plus my usual liberal shit, and we ended up having a nice talk about the political nature of the subject.

I'm sure she was deeply offended at first, and I'm hoping I haven't damaged our professional relationship because we work closely and have always gotten along otherwise. So far I think she just wrote it off as ignorance and bad humor, since our manager hasn't approached me about it at all.

It's not perfect, but who can really say they have it all? I enjoy myself enough, despite my flaws and struggles. Tell me some of yours!

I'm just saying, I would rather be in jail than have a life where I worry about being politically correct in public.

Here's mine:  I was engaged in a consumer exchange with an acquaintence.  He and I met and exchanged pleasantries after we conducted business.  I said to him, 'So how have you been?'  'Fine, how about yourself?'  he replied.  I answered back 'I'm good, you?'  Then I felt fucking stupid, but I am not sure he noticed or cared.

I was in an argument outside of a bar one time, I was drunk and coked up and calling this guy a faggot cunt mother fucker for saying he supports the 1% and poor people should die. A couple of big mexican dudes come out of the bar and they're like, "Yo, our girl friends in there are lesbian and we don't appreciate you saying stuff about gay people."

I crack up and I'm like, "Dude, I don't care if you suck dick or eat pussy or do both. I'm just letting this guy know that he's a cunt."

They just shrugged and went inside.

Point taken, it wasn't really about the professional repercussions. As a child, did you know any kids at school with gay parents? They don't exactly receive praise from the other students. Lots of them are tormented and excluded by peers and faculty alike. I might have touched on some very unpleasant memories for her. It's like saying the word 'nigger' only to find that a black friend for whom you have some respect is actually standing in earshot.

Oh, and I do that all the time. Usually when I'm that mindless it means I'm just really tired, or else I don't actually want to talk about how I'm doing or don't care for the person asking. Luckily this means there aren't really consequences for me, though the person saying hi might feel slighted.
