punk rock vs techno?
« on: October 22, 2014, 02:29:46 am »
which one do you think is better? techno is pretty gay, it's just like pacman music, dumb kids running around in circles eating xtc. punk rock is about life and social injustice and unity in the world with an aggressive raw edge that raver fags could understand. discuss/thread

Both genres are ambiguous. Sometimes people use "techno" to describe electronic music in general, sometimes a specific stream of popular music in the late 80's, or a the family of genres that started in the mid 80s in detroit. "Punk" spans the gamut from The Clash to Infest. You'll have to be more specific.

I was never really into detroit techno itself, that that scene eventually gave rise to IDM in the 90s which is a staple genre for me, so I appreciate the artistic inheritance at least. I like some modern techno/drone and micro-techno acts like Emptyset but usually only to the extent that they stray away from techno cliches.

As for punk, early punk-rock was shit. Maybe it was a necessary evolutionary step but fuck if you'll catch me listening to it. I have a lot of respect for hardcore though. Like I probably only listen to it every now and then but I like the politics, I like the energy, I like the ethic. Sometimes I feel like judging the genre just on the strictly auditory aspects of recordings is doing it an injustice. I filled in on bass for a hardcore band a few times a friend was in when I was in highshcool and the experience of a show was just incredible. I'm a pretty shitty bass player, everyone else was pretty shit at their instruments, but the place was packed, super high energy, everyone having fun, it was blast just to be there.

And of course both a bunch of other genres were informed by or directly spawned from hardcore including two of my favorites, mathrock and emo.

So IDK, maybe I like punk more just in the sense that it gave rise to more musical diversity. In any case the "pacman music" complaint is dumb.

lol lanny, always overthinking shit. personally, i don't find that necessary to compare these genres.

for simplicity sake i will just classify all electronic music as techno and all genres/styles of punk as punk. punk wins hands down. techno music is gay. punk has the energy and instruments, which are infinitely better than some programmed sounds.

Lol, I felt pretty dorky after posting that. But I stick by what I said!

And if you're calling all of electronic "techo" then you need to broaden your horizons dude. Crystal Castles for their third album used no computers and no synthesizers before the post-production stage which is less than most "rock bands" can say yet they're still considered an electronic act so the "oh, punk uses instruments" argument fails (which doesn't even touch on the fact that electronic production of music is entirely as involved as it is with instruments).

Also you can't say anything coherent when you consider "electronic" as a genre, there's far too much diversity to make a meaningful comparison to anything.

Techno is a specific sub-genre of electronic music.

99% of the people who use the term 'techno' are using it improperly and are generalizing all electronic music which is ridiculous.

Well, like I said, it was for the sake of simplicity. It isn't necessary for me to get into the nitty gritty of the subgenres of electronic and punk music because I simply prefer guitars. I wasn't trying to suggest that no techno artist uses instruments either. I just prefer instruments in a punk/metal/prog context. I find that electronic music generally fails to capture the feel that can come from a guitar, bass and drums. Something about having that direct link with your instrument. Computers just aren't the same for me.

I like a little of both. Its difficult for me to just put aside a whole genre of music because the stereotype sound isn't exactly what I like.. I've found a few gems across all genres.. classical, techno, punk, bluegrass.. some country (but we're talking old country).. opera.. reggae.. etc..

Punk rock. Techno music is absolute shit and the only genre I can't dig (this includes dubstep) besides classical music and Asian pop music.
