How to free up space on Macbook Air?
« on: October 03, 2014, 02:30:11 am »
60GB SSD is rough.  I have Windows installed on a virtual machine (for school stuff) and that takes up an increasing amount of space.  Might end up needing to put that on my external drive, but at the same time fuck that.

Already I keep all my media files on my external.  Can I delete stuff that comes standard (applications, whatever) and free up much at all?  Or should I give up trying to make my tiny SSD work this way haha.  Should have paid for the upgraded drive, but I didn't know I'd be doing stuff like this on my tiny laptop.

The majority of the HD requirements for OSX are in the OS itself, you might gain some space by ditching iMovie and Garage Band or whatever, but not that much. Picking an aggressive limit on your virtual machine's disk size might help. You'll probably have to shuffle files in and out of your VM a bit but it's better to have the guest OS keeping a hard limit than letting it spill over into your host's storage. Also depending on what your requirements for school are you might consider an older windows VM, XP's space requirements are significantly lower than 7's.

If none of that is applicable or sufficient then your only option seems to be shifting your VM off onto external storage. Kind of a pain, but at least it's possible to do.

Why don't you just install a larger SSD?

OH WAIT IT'S A MAC YOU CAN'T HAHAHAHA

Sell your shiny hipster machine to an 'aspiring musician' or arts major at a local Starbucks and buy a real computer.

I like my tiny laptop 'cause it's so small and light and I'm walking around with a heavy backpack all day :/

seriously though, 60GB isn't much as a sole storage device. it looks like you already have a portable harddrive, so why not use that to store all your media and schoolwork? not to be condescending, but are you aware that in virtualbox, you can assign a USB device (ie. harddrive) to the guest operating system, so if you need to do work in Windows, you can save it to the harddrive instead of constantly expanding the virtual drive?

also, if you're looking for something a little more elegant, you can always get a nano USB memory stick:

something like that could be left in all the time as it's small enough and rounded enough that it won't catch on a case or bag or anything like that.
