Flying Lotus - You're Dead!
Newest from FlyLo, Los Angeles producer who's been definitive in the American response to English IDM. You're Dead is definitely the most clearly hiphop release from Flying Lotus to date. Previous releases, particularly in the his LA era, show clear hiphop sensibilities but this is the first release that challenges "electronic" genre designation, which has been pretty unquestionable on earlier works, with a real threat of being a true hiphop album. Despite his Captain Murphy project where Ellison is the primary lyricist, under his Flying Lotus moniker guest vocals have made up either the vast or complete majority of lyrical appeacenes. This trend has continued on You're Dead with guest appearances from Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar, in addition to long time collaborator Niki Randa. People have been generally disparaging of the Kendrick Lamar appearance but I have to say I disagree. I don't think Lamar is really that integral to it, but I love the track (number 5, Never Catch Me). I thought the following track with Snoop Dogg was a lot weaker. The Randa track later is solid but not mind blowing like previous appearances. In general I'm not sure I'm not crazy about the stronger hiphop influence on this album, I'd kinda like FlyLo to keep that to his Captain Murphy releases but it doesn't ruin it for me. I think my favorite track so far is Turkey Dog Coma, it feels the most like something off Cosmogramma.
On the whole I'd say Your Dead! sits somewhere slightly above Until The Quiet Comes but doesn't touch Cosmogramma.
