Since it's 9/11 I figured I'd listen to William Basinski's The Disintegration Loops. For those that don't know, Basinski finished the project on 9/11 in 2001, they're re-recordings of damaged earlier work. As the story goes the tape literally fell apart as it was being read, so each track is a short piece looped over and over becoming increasingly more distorted.
I'm not usually into avant garde but I thought the concept was cool enough that I enjoy listening from time to time. It's like a five hour recording though so sitting down with it annually is about I care to do. What do you guys think? I imagine it sounds really pretentious to some people. Have you heard it before? Will you be playing it again?
