That is... an opinion that some people hold and for which seemingly convincing arguments can me made. There is a long running clash of ideologies in programming and the whole getters/setters thing is one paradigmatic place where that gets played out. There's the notion of "information hiding" that's really near and dear to people in the OOP world. The classic example that's supposed to illustrate this point involves rectangles (other shapes will do, but area is easy for rectangles):
not specific to OO, I like the concept of having standardised functions to update common files/variables/objects because if I need to change the structure of the data, I only need to make changes in one place as opposed to all over the code. it's not mandatory or anything but it's a good idea.

I agree with risir near the top; I've heard of way too many side-effects stemming from the latest cannabinoids (fubinaca and co) and there has been almost zero human testing on them. I don't know much about the stims, but I suspect it's the same story.

Well, you know what? Some totse members say you're wrong as well, not just me.
Besides, on a site as big and as varied as totse, there's ALWAYS fighting. In fact, it would be strange if there wasn't. And even if you WERE right and there were INSANELY massive fights that tore it apart, that was the work of the members, not sites like Facebook or Twitter or whatever.
in terms of infighting, I believe he's referring to generally massive mod drama because jeff was never around to keep them in line. I actually don't remember much of it except MLoR fucking his dog. and Meta arguing with everyone else because he really, really liked to infract people.
also because most of them were catastrophic degenerates.
the rise of social networking sites diminished and still drives down the popularity of messageboards, especially general ones... even if there was capable leadership that everyone respected and drama was somehow erased, there's no way any of these mimics could ever grow to the size and popularity of totse because the majority of people do not use the internet that way anymore.
