Title: My Windows 8.1 laptop wont connect to wifi
Post by: Rodrat on September 04, 2014, 05:30:00 am
Specifically my own router. It will connect just fine with an Ethernet cord and will connect with other routers via wifi that I tried but it will not connect to mine. It sets for a really long time saying connecting. Then gives me the message that it is taking longer than usual then stops.

I have tried everything I can think of but I am not as tech savvy as I used to be. If you need any specific information then tell me how to get it and I will help as much as I can.

Look on the bottom/back of the router and post the make and model number.

Or, if it's listed, log into the router using the address and default username and password, then see if there are any settings pertaining to WiFi that need to be changed.

If all else fails, you can always reset it and try again. Sometimes, it can be as simple as powering it off for a few minutes and then back on. That's been the case for me a time or two.

Its and HP 2000 Notebook. I got it just a little over a year ago.

The router is Ubee and the model no. is DDW365.

There is nothing else listed on it.

P.S. I also tried turning off the router several times. I tried looking for drivers for my laptop thinking it could be something like that but have had no luck.

Go to device manager and expad network adapters or w/e its called (im on osx now fuck rebooting) and unless you see any devices with a yellow exclamation point sign thing next to it then they all have proper drivers already installed.

Its the router that came with internet that we had set up just over a month ago. Is it possible to get a new one? Would I have to do anything? My internet is through Time Warner.

I just after randomly trying got it too connect to it.

My wife has no trouble connecting and I can connect my phone and table to it as well as the playstation. For a while I was having to reset the computer if it went to sleep to get it to reconnect and as of two days now it wont connect at all. I have it working at the moment but who knows for how long.

I am worried that it might be something wrong between it and my computer specifically. If I get a new router would I just have to plug it in and the internet just go through it or what? I don't know shit about modem and routers.

Do you have a modem and a router or a gateway?

sounds like one of those modem/router in one deals those things are commonly shitty and ISPs give you used ones most of the time so they are prone to failure.

anyways problems fixed I guess but maybe buy a new router in the future

Its just one box so I guess gateway? Like I said I don't know shit about this stuff. My computer is still connected today but it was like this earlier so its just a matter of time until it changes its mind and goes offline.

Well you're not making much sense to me. Like I said I have no idea how these things work. It is obviously working now so I don't know what I can do. Being rude about it isn't going to help me. Also no one has really answered my question about a new router anyway.

Do you have the same problem with other networks  as well or is it just your network at home?

It appears to just be this network and this specific computer.

After reading up a bit on the HP 2000 series this seems to be, oddly enough, not that uncommon. Driver issues are probably the reason for your issues as you've been able to connect previously. It would be interesting to see if the problem persists while using linux but I guess that's out of question in this case.
Besides buying a different WLAN USB Adapter you could try to update or exchange the drivers, this is fairly easy to do even with little or no knowledge.
Which exact model out of the HP 2000 series are you using?

If I did that right the number with the # should be the model according to HP's site.

rude? It is a common sense thing. Right click on your wifi and troubleshoot. Go to device manager in control and update driver or browse HP site for hardware updates............................if and when I become rude you will sure as fuck take offense to my response; at the moment I am trying to help you

how ling has it been this way. My best thought on winning this is to kill your current driver and use your manufactures driver in case Micorsoft updated something you didn't wannt done. As a last dish resort....I refreshed mine and it is blazing fast
THROUGH WINDOWS 8

To access the System Restore, Refresh and Reset options from Windows 8, perform the following:

Open the Charm Bar. This can be accomplished by either holding the Windows key and pressing the ‘c’ key or on a device with a touch interface by swiping from the right hand side of the screen towards the center.
Select “Settings,” and then select “Change PC Settings” at the bottom. This opens the PC Settings app.
Select “General” at the left.
Scroll the right section to the bottom and select the "Restart now" button under “Advanced startup.”
The computer will display a Blue screen and bring you to the Advanced startup screen.
Select Troubleshoot. Under Troubleshoot you will see “Refresh” and “Reset”.
Select “Advanced options.” Located here is "System Restore."
THROUGH F12 AT STARTUP

To access the System Restore, Refresh and Reset options using the F12 option at startup, perform the following:

If not already, ensure the computer is completely shut down. How To: Shut Down a Laptop with Windows 8
Now restart the computer by pressing the power button - IMMEDIATELY start tapping the F12 key on the keyboard until the "Boot Menu" screen appears.
Using the arrow keys, select <HDD Recovery> and press "Enter".
On the next screen you are asked to confirm if you want to contiue with recovery. Select "Yes".
The computer will bring you to the Advanced startup screen.
Select Troubleshoot. Under Troubleshoot you will see “Refresh” and “Reset”.
Select “Advanced options.” Located here is "System Restore."
start new and use your factory drivers. I can't ge my WiDi operating right but a refresh is your best option and keep all files

system restore is pretty extreme

bit of an old thread, but I'd recommend forcing the access point to 802.11G/N; disabled the a/b bands altogether because I've had issues with that in the past.

I said refresh not restore (all files remain)  and then let him download drivers from his manufacturer I wouldn't want stuck with a cable.......or download the driver from manufacturer uninstall current driver that may have came in updates and use the new one

I actually did do a system restore shortly after opening this thread that did not fix it all. I My playstation 3 starting having trouble as well and so did my tablet. Called the company and forever later they finally come out and they changed the wiring into the apartment and gave me a new router. The internet is physically faster since then which is great, but I am still having the random hiccup with it not connecting. Though much rarer it is.
