so get one.  they are probably the most widely produced pistol in assorted variants and price ranges out there.  you can get a cheapo one for a few hundred dollars or a top-end one (wilson) for a few grand.  you can find a used one for cheap too.  since a .45 is a relatively low-pressure round the pistols fare fairly well over their life time

I should have said that I want a good 1911. The cheapo ones are rather bad I hear. One theory for this is that 1911's were originally designed to be handmade. The design doesn't lend itself well to mass production.

yes, the cheap ones are bad.  i know someone that bought some ghetto-brand 1911 and it wouldnt feet properly unless it was ball ammo.

i dont know where that urban legend came from.  mass production or hand made...quality is quality.  pay cheap prices for cheap workmanship, you get cheap final product
