Title: The legacy can continue here: my prespective
Post by: Cory on September 02, 2014, 02:09:47 pm
Well, it seems this is the new designated "home" of the continuing Totse community (or what's left of it). Now I know good and well how disappointing it is when a site shuts down and there will be some drain, I still think the community isn't over. I remember first making a Totse account (CC) when I was 14, and since then it's been my internet home (I'm 24 now). I remember when Jeff Hunter was shutting down Totse, and how disappointing it was and my concerns over the survival of the community. When we first went to Zoklet it was a rough start, but the community survived and even prospered into it's own culture based of the original Totse legacy. The fact of the matter is all cultures and communities change over time, waxing and waning. This is nothing new. We've done this before and turned out fine.

I have full confidence that the Totse/Zoklet legacy can and will continue strong here if we rally and migrate. Just remember this isn't the first time we've had to do this. It sucks yeah, but we carry on. Just as Zoklet carried the Totse legacy, Sanctuary can carry the Zoklet legacy. The Totse community will carry on.

Actually sanctuary  was already carrying on the legacy of totse2  which  in  turn formed from totse as we didn't want to go to zoks shit hole.

I'll  miss dosing  zoklet  offline.

I think this place is already better than zoklet and has more potential.

If you had of made a stand early in the game and resigned instead of continuing to support an obviously corrupt administration and staff, your thread here might have had more merit. It was staff members like you and mizled and some others who greatly added to the forum's demise by sitting on the fence just to keep your username bolded, and in doing so, you gave zok's lapdogs the appearance that he had the support of the better part of the community, which he did not. You only looked to personal gain and personal satisfaction rather than the forum's actual welfare and health. We can only hope you and the others learned a lesson from the outcome of your inexcusable pacifism and take it from here.

I agree, Cory. There's no reason the legacy needs to end with zoklet. The community is more than just a website.

If people stick around Sanctuary someone should contact some of the members who left zoklet due to management issues. It's possible that some of these people might be interested in coming back or at least checking in. Although, at the same time, as I write this it seems very unlikely.

What the fuck are you even going on about? "Sitting on the fence"? In regards to what? I wasn't involved in whatever forum politics you're going on about and the people like you who seem to only come on the site to bitch about the way it's run have more to do with this then anyone else. I'm sorry I didn't get involved in your little drama club but whatever. The fact of the matter is here we are and we have to make the most out of it and not allow the community to die.

I am impressed that as a community we organized quickly to find a new place and I'm liking this place so far.

I hope the increased strain on the site admins doesn't become an issue. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the next few weeks.

I think panthrax, nameless NOD and others uploading the threads is really important. Cross posting info here will result in more crawlers and hits, it's basically the only way to prevent sanctuary from shrinking and shrinking until it's what it was a week ago

Yeah, salvaging the good threads is essential.

I feel dirty for agreeing with UM.

It's going to take quite a while to do that. The bandwidth I'm getting from the server is shit. Utter shit. It's going to take a long time to rip Zoklet and I hope that Zok doesn't yank the plug out before it's finished. It's currently been downloading for about 12 hours now. I imagine it still is. I'll have to check when I get home.

As far as the continuity of the original totse community, of course it will continue on here. Whether or not Sanctuary becomes the idealic place we hoped for or not is totally based on support and (quality) content generation. If we can manage to do that, then the rest just falls in line.

how much longer do you think?

I'd have to check and see what the total size of Zoklet is first and then compare that to how much I have downloaded already and figure in the current rate of speed. This morning, when I last glanced at it, I was downloading at about 200kb/sec (slow as fucking molasses). It would wildly fluctuate in speed, too. Sometimes it would drop into BYTES per second. I think it's Zok's host trying to regulate how much bandwidth any one connection can pull or either he himself throttled me.

At any rate, I'm just going to leave it and let it run day and night until it's finished.

But then of course once it's finished, that will only provide me with the raw data. I will still need a mysql server setup to "mirror" zoklet, which I can do later. The resulting upload to THAT server is going to take almost equally as long as it will take to download it.

I will let everyone know once it is online and I will just keep it around as a mirror site, closed forum.

cool, even if it's the shitty text that you see on other historic forums it'd be great to have for posterity's sake
