U2's Bono has revealed that he has worn dark sunglasses in public for 20 years because he has glaucoma.

The shades have become Bono's fashion trademark, but he revealed on The Graham Norton Show that they also provide a functional purpose.

This is a good place to explain to people that I've had glaucoma for the last 20 years," he explained.

He added: "I have good treatments and I am going to be fine."

The Irish singer went on to make light of his plight, saying: "You're not going to get this out of your head now and you will be saying, 'Ah, poor old blind Bono'."

U2 took part in a Reddit AMA session this week, in which they responded to the backlash of releasing their new LP Songs of Innocence to every Apple user.

"I had this beautiful idea and we got carried away with ourselves - artists are prone to that kind of thing," Bono explained.

"Drop of megalomania, twitch of generosity, dash of self-promotion and deep fear that these songs that we've poured our life into over the last few years mightn't be heard."
