If I were a mod, I'd kill myself for having nothing more worthwhile to dedicate my time to.

Modding Zoklet was a sweet gig. Throwing out user complaints, doing whatever the fuck I wanted with perfect impunity while I downplay the naysayers on their soapboxes of truth, all for a 50k salary and I still got to scrape the top off the donation cap, with benefits and 401k. Zok got us this sick health plan through Humana with a dirty Korean massage network by referral.

I've modded some small forums in the day, and its really nothing fancy to be in that position. Of course, those boards weren't nearly as capable of mutiny as &T, &Z, and probably this place. If your doing your job right, your basically doing what you already do as typical board patron.. reading every thread, checking back as it updates, making sure the rules are followed and the shit posts are dealt with. If your not prepared for it, it can actually become mind numbing. While I understand the experience would be good if you were planning to do your own board one day, or had ambitions of helping administer or moderate a more popular/commercial forum.. What specific job would you be applying for to which you wouldn't mind them knowing you actively browsed and worked here? Go look at the trending threads list... unless its a forum with the same goals/ideals as this one, they're probably not gong to be too impressed..

I've been a mod before in a vastly different type of community, but it was an awesome community nonetheless.  However, my real life is pretty active, so I enjoy just getting on and posting random BS when I have some free time, rather than having to spend that little bit of time modding other people's random BS.

Modding MadSci at &T was pretty awesome. Sometimes I would go weeks without having to do anything more than just contribute to the conversations. Those poor bastards at Bad Ideas though...

True. Depending on the board also makes a big difference, and the boards to moderator ratio is also important. Depending on the situation it can be not much different than being a regular user with the occasional thread clean-up, or a constant struggle to maintain order.

When you really think about it, one of the most difficult things about boards such as this, that appears to possess more freedom than most.. It is those that are run with a heavy hand and a sense of dictatorship that are more likely to thrive and maintain steady content.

Unfortunately, you can't do that here without ruining the idea and failing at the concept. Being a moderator here, I would say is similar to being a government official to the United States... there are people who want the power, people who get the power.. some good.. some bad.. and ultimately, the majority of us hate them all, especially the president/administrator.. It's just a theme that has been played out and ingrained in our social development, and yet.. we accept it, whether it makes sense or not.
