I get suspicious of other people when they compliment me. I do not really believe that they are being genuine. I feel like they must have some ulterior motive for complimenting me. I know I am not really as great as they are making me out to be. There must be some other reason that they are complimenting me because I feel that what they are saying is untrue.
Does anyone else get this feeling? What does it mean?

Yes. I have that problem. People who are too nice make me uncomfortable.

If they say you are good looking or handsome I would be suspicious but it feels like you had a childhood of never having compliments or being made to feel complimants are a bad thing.

I'm in the same boat. If I get complimented, I either feel mocked, or that the world is in deep shit if I'm an example to be looked up to.
This goes double if I'm told how good a lover I am.

If more than one person gives you the same compliment, it could mean there is really something there that you aren't seeing.

It really just depends on who the comment is coming from. Generally, if your getting the vibe in your gut that a person is full of shit, then most of the time, they likely are. There are certain subtleties in tone, facial expression, and body movement when someone is faking a compliment.. you usually can just tell. Where as the genuine article can be determined by earnest excitement or an otherwise touching moment from someone who doesn't regularly maker such comments. Just something you pick up with in time depending on how many assholes you manage to surround yourself around.
