I'm going to be hitting my first anime convention at the end of October. Gotta say, I'm a little intimidated, since I feel like kind of a dabbler. Ah well, fuck it, at least I'll know some of the people there. And I can hopefully get my Death Note DVDs autographed.
For anyone that cares, it's Youmacon (http://www.youmacon.com/), in Detroit. And in that spirit, I'm currently watching Detroit Metal City. Utterly. Fucking. Hilarious.

I never thought I'd go to one, but I ended up dating an anime chick (super hot, worth it), and I was dragged to a con. I ended up having a fucking blast and I've attended a bunch since then.
Everyone is shit faced and there are parties nonstop. Due to their very nature, almost everyone is incredibly open and encouraging. Definitely do not be intimidated. It'll be some of the friendliest people you ever meet.

I'm a long time veteran of sci-fi conventions, so I know the general shape of a fandom con. And yeah, they're a hoot. I just hate being out of my depth on subject matter. It's a good excuse to be drunk for 4 straight days though, that's for sure.

God, the alcohol. It makes frat parties look tame as fuck.

I've only been to one. It was AWESOME! Bought the full series of the Super Mario Super Show! there... Still have no idea why they were selling that there.

I'd definitely go to one. I love to watch anime, and have a deep appreciation for the art form and the media, but I'm not like a die-hard fan.. Kinda hard to describe. I have a huge collection of Anime, but I'm not like into posters, figurines, or anything like that. I do have some Manga though so..
I've been into anime since I was a young kid.. Toonami and shows like Gundam Wing, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Read or Die, etc.. I never really looked back after being introduced. My taste has grown wildly since then, and as bad as it is to say.. or good.. I'm so glad that when I met my fiance, when she first started mentioning some of her favorite animated movies, Princess Mononoke came up.. I knew she was one of the good ones.. lol.
We have been planning to go to the Comic Con out of Louisville they have each year, but missed it this year. I may have to check on some actual Anime Cons that are happening local.. Hell, I'd even dress up for the occasion.. You know it'd be a blast.. Like an awesome halloween party anytime of year, with great media, cool people, parties.. I think I'm getting just a little too inspired.

If you're in Louisville, KY, another good one to check out is MTAC in Nashville. It's always a pretty decent size and a lot of fun. Though I heard they made some changes recently that made it suck. I haven't been in a couple of years so I can't say. But it's worth looking into.

Just back from day 1.
Thing that made me smile: Sitting in the food court eating dinner. Gorgeous woman in a tight red dress standing nearby. Woman in tight pink dress (part of a Chobits costume) comes up to her. "Oh god, I love your boobs!" Grope juggle grope juggle. "They're natural too!" Turns to friend, "look at these things, aren't they great!" Both hands, juggle juggle juggle. Woman in red dress, "Yours are really nice too!" Grope juggle juggle juggle. This went on for at least 5 minutes.
WTF Japan moment: A panel devoted to mocking dating sims. Reading (and paraphrasing) pornographic dialogue in comedic voices. Kirk and Spock, for example. Apparently one, Imouto Paradise, has a really really long scene where the protagonist fucks his little sister in the armpit. WTF Japan? WTF? This is part of a game where the point is to plow one of the 5 younger sisters. I repeat, WTF?
Favorite panel: Your Favorite Anime Sucks, pick someone in the audience to tell their favorite anime, then the hosts make fun of it. Notable comments include speculating on Winry's ability to make automail dicks, Detroit Metal City being the most American show to ever come out of Japan, Sword Art being Log Horizon for the short bus crowd, and Spice and Wolf "Halfway through the first episode she put clothes on, so I closed VLC." Also mocking the audience. Apparently I'm 'guy who's stuck in 1989.'

lol, sounds like you had a good time :)
I would love to attend one of these but I never have any extra damn money these days so I can't. I mean, literally, I will have a breakdown if I can't buy ANYTHING.. I'm that type of person that can't go windowshopping. N i hate ordering things online, because I get such a rush buying things on the spot in store. That instnt gratification.

I was going to buy School Days DVD (haven't seen it, but it sounds delightfully fucked up), but the ATM was empty. Hitting the bank on the way there tomorrow. As far as the expense goes, $60 for for 3 day pass. Waited too long to try getting a room, so just commuting. Saved over $300 that way, but forfeited the ability to go get my mid-day shower.

Day three
Moment of inspiration: Weekend long charity fundraiser for a regular at the con who has breast cancer. $600 raised as of closing ceremonies. It was announced that if they broke $1,000, they would shave the head of the founder of the con. $5+ and you get to pet his beard (it was an epic beard). $100+, and you get to keep the beard after they shave it off. Boom, $2,000 even. The beard had to be split 3 ways. The shaving took a loooooong time. Apparently it was like shaving your living room carpet.
New anime purchased:
Eureka 7 (because it's one of my favorites)
Watamote
Welcome to the NHK
Excel Saga
Kanon
Women made out with: 0, but somehow still came home with con-plague.
Hentai seen: more than the rest of my life put together.

I've always wanted to go to one. Really should sometime; I know they happen regularly in Denver.

Couldn't spend the whole weekend there, waited to long to try to book a room so had to commute, and saturday was a complete wash. Electrical blackout at home that had to be monitored so my cats didn't freeze. Cop drama over a neighbor shooting at someone, just a total clusterfuck. And it was a new con for me with a mostly new crowd, totally threw me off my game. I'm not good with social situations to start with, I only do halfway decent at sci-fi cons because I know the score, and spend the weekend drunk enough to be charming. This was a no booze event. I could have gone into one of the casinos, but even at those prices, that gets super expensive fast. No bigs, I'll make up for it at the next one. I'm also so in the habit of 2 showers a day at con that I feel gross if I don't get it. Some will get accused of con funk, but it won't be me.

Welp, everyone had to start off somewhere....

How often do you even watch anime? Can you count the number of series you know on your hands?
