getaround (https://www.getaround.com/safety), for example.
"We cross-check driving record with social identity through Facebook, the credit bureau, and 16 other points of reference."
I wonder what those points of reference are? Most owners probably don't use satellite trackers like LoJack unless the car is new.
"Getaround rentals are insured through our primary insurance policy. Coverage includes liability, collision, property damage, uninsured motorist protection, and theft."
"We take a 40% commission on rental earnings."

Ouch. 40% commission? That right there is a scam. Robbery.

Given the fact that the site takes care of all things financial, legal, insurance, road assistance etc. i don't think it's a bad deal really
I kinda dig the idea

being a mechanic and an avid craigslister, I see potential to make stupid profit on something like this...if I lived in an area where this is needed.
get 3 $500 craigslist specials (need trans/need motor/been sitting) fix them, and use this service to pimp them out...when they die, so what. offer to sell them to whoever rents them.
they bring customers to me, and take care of the liability.
that being said, I'd never let randoms drive my driver/projects. someone would do something stupid, and who's gunna buy me a new motor?
