The Spanish health minister has confirmed that a nurse who treated a victim of Ebola in Madrid has tested positive for the disease.
The nurse is said to be the first person in the current outbreak known to have contracted Ebola outside Africa.
Health Minister Ana Mato said the woman was part of the team that treated Spanish priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, who died of the virus on 25 September.
Some 3,400 people have died in the outbreak - mostly in West Africa.
The Spanish nurse is in a stable condition, Reuters quoted health officials as saying. She started to feel ill last week when she was on holiday.
The nurse was admitted to hospital in Alcorcon, near Madrid, on Monday morning with a high fever, Ms Mato said.
Doctors isolated the emergency treatment room.
The infection was confirmed by two tests, the minister said.

The next few months are going to be interesting. Either we'll continue to be titilated by these isolated pseudo-doom-porn cases, or shit will truly have hit the fan by Christmas/New Year. If West Africa well and truly goes to hell will we, the developed nations, have leaders with suffiicently large balls to close the borders in time?
Britain has David Cameron. We are fucked.
USA...?

I think that this has the ability to reach disaster proportions. The next few months will be interesting indeed.

UPDATE: Most relevant sections copy/pasted below.
Health professionals in Madrid have blamed substandard equipment and a failure to follow protocol for the first case of Ebola to be contracted outside west Africa.
Health authorities announced on Monday that a Spanish nurse at Madrid’s Carlos III hospital who treated a patient repatriated from Sierra Leone had twice tested positive for Ebola.
Staff at the hospital where she worked told El País that the protective suits they were given did not meet World Health Organisation (WHO) standards, which specify that suits must be impermeable and include breathing apparatus. Staff also pointed to latex gloves secured with adhesive tape as an example of how the suits were not impermeable and noted that they did not have their own breathing equipment.
Staff at the hospital said waste from the rooms of both patients was carried out in the same elevator used by all personnel and, in the case of the second patient, the hospital was not evacuated.
The European commission said on Tuesday it had written to the Spanish health minister “to obtain some clarification” on how the nurse had become infected when all EU member states were supposed to have taken measures to prevent transmission.

The worst part is this hospital was prepared to receive an Ebola patient and they still managed to fuck up.

This is a big moment in history. I turned on the tv the other they and all they had on the news was talk about Ebola. I guess we just gotta wait to see hwo things turn out
-
this could get really, really interesting, or turn out to be nothing.
its too early to tell...although it is true, ebola is fairly difficult to spread (spreads the same as HIV/AIDS) except a person with HIV/AIDS can go 6 months+ running around infecting people before they know they are sick...ebola is (in comparison) fast acting.
if it manages to get waterborn/foodborn then we will have real problems

HIV transmission (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/transmission.html) is far more difficult than Ebola transmission (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/transmission.html) due to the greater number of bodily fluids in which Ebola virus can be present and that HIV/AIDS is primarily a sexually transmitted disease1, hence the extreme containment methods2 essential for containing an Ebola outbreak. Methods and procedures which this Spanish hospital did not adhere to.
1) "Once someone recovers from Ebola, they can no longer spread the virus. However, Ebola virus has been found in semen for up to 3 months. People who recover from Ebola are advised to abstain from sex or use condoms for 3 months." - U.S. CDC
West Africa is utterly fucked. We have enough trouble getting them to observe white man's Juju basic hygiene. (http://gotnews.com/liberias-terrible-hygiene-makes-ebola-containment-hard/)
2) Ebola containment in the UK's Porton Down facility is classed as Level 4. (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/ebola-the-virus-that-scares-even-scientists-1619475.html)
There is no higher level.

If U.S. troops in Africa get the Ebola virus, they will be taken to the United States on a specially designed plane and get treatment there, said the top U.S. general overseeing operations in Africa.

Why the fuck are we sending American troops to Africa? What are they going to do, shoot the Ebola with guns? It is almost as if the government wants them to get infected and to bring the disease to America. smh

Please don't get to Holland. Thanks, Ebola.

Britain has David Cameron. We are fucked.
The UK won't be screening people for Ebola. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2783741/No-plans-screen-travellers-entering-UK-Ebola-experts-say-NHS-robust-equipped-deal-deadly-virus.html) The idea the NHS is robust enough to deal with an outbreak gives me a headache. It has enough trouble coping with the annual flu season.
But screening would be expensive and possibly racist, you see. And we don't want to offend anyone's sensitivities in case some smug asshole from the Guardian writes a 'victim' piece about it.

34000 people dead I'll be worried

Ebola chan will be doing a world tour unless we start shooting niggers.

Sweet. Everybody knows Australia wins in the event of a global catastrophe. Old mate tony won't let any sick immigrants into our country, especially if they have dark skin.
