Title: Trolling windows users with a live linux USB/CD
Post by: peskybear on June 02, 2014, 03:37:52 am
I posted this on &T2 as well, but I found it on my hard drive so here you go again:

Got a pesky roommate or sibling that needs to be taught a lesson? Put some (or all?) of their files where they can't get them!

1. Create a live cd/usb of your favorite Linux distro and boot it on the target computer

2. Mount their C: drive or any other hard drive you wish to mess with

3. Put the contents of the desired directory (Desktop, documents, music, images, etc.) in a folder that has one of the forbidden windows characters
in it. The forbidden characters are as follows / : * ? " < > |
If you make the folders from the terminal you'll need to use the backslash escape character (\) before \, ;, *, ', ", |, <, and >.
? and : seem to work without a problem. You can also just right click and create a new folder from there. When you type it in from there, you shouldn't need the escape character.

4. When they click on this folder and try to open it, windows will tell them it's an invalid file name and then not be able to open
the folder. They won't be able to delete it either, so they'll be stuck with it until they either boot into a Linux environment and
change it themselves, or (if they aren't very savvy), give in to your demands and have you fix it.

Hide the porn! or System32!

Heh, that's a good trick. Not that funny though as far as computer pranks go IMAO. I like the classic take-a-screenshot-of-the-desktop-remove-the-icons-and-use-the-picture-as-the-wallpaper trick more.

Who needs funny when you've got demands?  :cosby:

Did this a couple times in middle school and high school. It is a great one!

Running chkdsk from Windows will fix that too

lol, at a local Vons they have some laptops out for people to sign up for their stupid bullshit. I was poking around to see if I could troll it at all, and it was locked down pretty good...except that I could get the command prompt to start up from the task manager for some reason. Figured deleting the C drive would be the fastest and easiest lolz, so I did. I think it took weeks for anyone to notice & fix it lol.

one time I went into a Telstra store; they had all the tablets and handsets hooked up to their wireless access point. wireless config > get gateway > navigate to it in browser - I'd intended to try out the default passwords, but nope, they had the password saved.

I added * to the 'parental lock sites' and changed the admin password on the AP and giggled. as I walked out of the store, I heard the staff complaining that they couldn't use their sales software because it'd been parental locked

My favorite one to pull is to remap the keyboard to swap the M and N. If possible, swap the physical keys as well. It takes people forever to figure out why they are suddenly making so many typos.
