I've hit a point where I don't want to copy passwords to and from a text file anymore and I don't want the browser to handle password management. What should I use? I see that keepass and keepassx seem to be popular, but slightly incompatible. What can I use to automatically fill in browser fields? I don't just want something that will be a glorified text file.

Keepassx is good. Double click to copy a password, then your clipboard is automatically erased after a set time period.

yewah didn't see this, I use keepass2 for work. it's free, has a whole host of encryption options and as mentioned above, a whole bunch of novel ways to enter passwords - for example, if someone's standing over you and you don't want to reveal a password but you need to log into something, double-click the asterisks (passwords are masked by default, you can choose to unmask them) to copy to clipboard, paste into the login form and the password's then purged from the clipboard.
