Anyone else watching this? Finished season 1 and season 2 won't be out for a long time. Shit's pretty awesome though.
It is set in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by enormous walls due to the Titans, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason. The story centers on Eren Yeager, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert, whose lives are changed forever after the appearance of a Colossus Titan brings about the destruction of their home town and the death of Eren's mother. Vowing revenge and to reclaim the world from the Titans, Eren, Mikasa and Armin enlist in the Military and join the Survey Corps—an elite group of soldiers who fight Titans outside the walls.

How many anime tropes does it stick to? Like on a scale from Naruto to Cowboy Bebop.

OK, let's try something different. Do you watch a lot of anime?

Define "a lot".
I have not watched either of the two you mentioned though.

Well, here. A list of some common anime tropes: http://io9.com/10-egregious-anime-cliches-498788300
Cowboy Bebop dodges all of that nonsense though and then some.

Remember that tropes are tools (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TropesAreTools). Also the claim that CowboyBebop doesn't exemplify any is silly. Even within anime, it's not THAT original.
But SnK is kind of middle of the road when it comes to anime cliches. Whiny protagonist, kuudere female lead who's inexplicably on his dick, after a while it gets pretty action-y. On the other hand it's very in your face with the shock/violence thing, very dark and pessimistic, lots of character death although the cast is so big to compensate for this they have to economize character development tightly. I thought the way it didn't pussyfoot on the violence was refreshing but they fucked the plot up bigtime like a third of a way in and it never really recovered.

I binge watched season 1 a few months ago on Netflix. It was Japanese with subtitles, which works for me because I can't stand the fucking American voice overs when it comes to anime. I haven't traditionally been a huge anime buff, but I give the highly acclaimed ones a shot, typically. I thought that it was extremely innovative, and for something animated, it did a very good job portraying the horrors of war and annihilation. Writing, dialogue, backstory, animation, all top notch, and almost as suspenseful as the final episodes of Breaking Bad, touche, zipperheads.
-
What about it struck you as innovative? Besides the disposable cast and gore I thought it was really pretty typical for the genre.
-
Specifically? I thought the 3D maneuverability gear was very well thought out. Thats the only innovation I can really think of, so maybe its typical, I just don't watch a whole lot of anime, it kept me entertained.
It was also less..."bubble-gumish" than most animes I've seen, pretty much the only comic relief is Potato Girl for a couple seconds, then the rest of the series is pretty much the protagonists trying to survive against all odds, the show is always at such a downer point, I also really liked that aspect...
