Title: any free criminal or general background check sites?
Post by: AverageJane on September 08, 2014, 05:06:28 am
I'm going to court against my landlord and even before he started screwing with me I had a feeling he may be trouble.

Now we are going to court for XYZ reasons and I would like to do some personal digging to see what I can find on this con man but all the websites I have found I have to pay for

Also, does anyone know how to get a copy of a Craigslist ad that has been deleted to use in court? I know the police can ask but this isnt a criminal case.

You can check the online court case info for the STATE and countys you are in. If you are in the USA>

Just google 'online court case information (your state here)

works for other places too if you know there basic info, such as first and last name

As stated above you can look up online court cases. My county also allows you to look up inmates currently in the county jail and has an option to search the archive records therefore I am able to quickly see anyone who has been booked in the county jail and for what reason.

Most of the background check sites end up being paid, do what Skygear said. With some of the landlords basic info you could come across something.

^If you can't get the cached craigslist page, you can recreate it yourself using the firebug add-on for firefox and then take a screenshot, just make sure the date and time on your desktop matches up.

This may sound like a minor quibble, but are you taking him to court or is he taking you to court?

How do I do this? If you could explain I would REALLY appreciate it!!

I sent him a letter requesting some major repairs in the house (window/wall leak in the basement -- water pooling in my laundry room) and my ceiling falling down in the basement, etc and he responded to that with an eviction notice. I have perfect renters history, have always paid him on time and my house is spotless. I am fighting the eviction and building my case. I was just curious how many other people he's done this to.

If you are using it to "dig up dirt" that sounds more like blackmail to get him to drop the eviction. What were his grounds for eviction? How is the landlord being a "con man"?

The county clerk of courts keeps records on civil and criminal cases. Also, they or the county/city property appraiser could have history on his properties

A judge can make a subpoena for certain things if theyre pertinent to a case.

Just google his name and search those mugshot archiving websites, like busted and other nonsense. I hate those sites.

No, I'm not like that. I want to see if he's done this to other people and I am trying to  better grasp his character, he has been overly aggressive and rude to me. He owes me 450 in gas/utility bills, as per the lease I am not responsible for gas. He refuses. Also, he posted a bunch of false information about the rental on the Craigslist ad.

What you need to search for is "court docket" in the city he's in and also in the cities he's lived in.
Then also check out the BBB for any complaints against him.

Do you know if he took pictures of the apartment before you rented it? If not, it's pretty much his word against yours, next time you rent something take pictures of literally EVERY thing in the apartment, even if there's a stain on the stove, snap a photo of it. I understand he evicted you for no reason, but I definitely see this side coming up in court (you bringing up the truth lol)

Secondly, search your city/area with his name or your apartment complex etc..on Topix.

This is for informational purposes only. There's most likely better ways, but this is easy enough for noobs. Fuck, I'm not even a script kiddie really.

Firebug allows someone to make a webpage say whatever they want, but if they close the window, they lose it. Someone could install firebug (https://getfirebug.com/html) and find a current CL ad in the same category. All they'd have to do would be to open firebug, run their mouse over the lines of code, and expand them until they found what they wanted to edit, then close firebug and take a screenshot when they've finished.

To cover their tracks, they'd want to photoshop the firebug icon out of the toolbar on the off chance it gets recognized (a screenshot of firefox before installation would be useful), change the numbers in the URL so that it produces an error if someone were to type it in, and change the date/time on their browser to match what they made those on the page (right click on the time -> adjust date/time. In windows at least). As backup, they could even disable their wifi, take their laptop to court with them and bring up the page "right there" in front of the judge.
