Title: need a new car for space
Post by: Bobapanbeers on September 06, 2014, 02:27:11 am
Hello!

I have a growing family and I need a fucking bigger car to haul strollers and kid junk.  Dodge Grand Caravan is an obvious choice I fucking hate vans.  Keep in mind I'm a bit light on the pesos right now, it has to be below 17500 $.  I was thinking about something used, Ford Edge maybe?

thanks!

from a mechanical perspective, something on a truck chassis will last the longest and be the most durable. I have had nothing but positive experience with suburbans/tahoes. find a low mileage one with the aluminum block LM7/4L60-E and keep up with your tranny maintenance, it will last damn near forever.

truck platforms will also get worse gas mileage, station wagons are a good midpoint.

I'm yet to find a minivan I like. Mercedes R-class is RWD and is available in AMG trim, but it is German, if you don't do the work yourself (and its NOT easy) get ready to pay anytime anything breaks.

definitely look into the suburban/tahoe, its the full package for what you need. 17.5k will buy a top of the line one with only a few miles on it.

Do you have to spend that much on a car?  I wonder if you have this much cash or are going to finance..  Either way if you could be happy in a cheaper set of wheels, you would have a lot left over or a smaller payment.

Since I'm not 12 years old I have that amount in cash.  A car is a nwt loss so yes I would rather put that cash elsewhere but family comes first

I'm afraid you might be stuck with a van. But, there are cool vans around, you just need some humility. Depending on where you are, you could get a Delica, or a Vanagon, or if you'd rather play it safe one of those old V8 Chevy vans. Or you could spend a few grand on a used Toyota mini van (the old Previa's are super-reliable, mid engined, some are AWD, kinda gay but kinda not by van standards) or even play it safe and get a newer model Toyota. Which are very gay indeed I'm afraid. The Dodges are okay but I'd be much more willing to trust a Toyota in the long run, despite the gayness of driving a mini van.

...you could get a Toyota pick up? Some sort of 4-door hilux derivative?

gmc suburban

Have fun with that fuel mileage. And though they aren't bad vehicles, I would say the Suburban is much more mumsy than any minivan, since it's usually yuppie mom's that drive them nowadays. Maybe it is the car for OP

Any V6/straight 6 sedan will be better all around. Designed for carrying people, designed to have lots of shit in the boot, decent economy for it's size, straight/V6 has plenty of torque for when it's loaded up.

Why a van/minivan/SUV? Just going to make parking harder with all the blind spots and handle/stop like shit with those undersized brakes and the excessive body weight of them. Not to mention the handling with the body that far above the wheels...station wagons are a solid choice though, it's like a sedan with a fat ass, can even add extra seats in the back section on some if you need them.

If you were in Aus, a Ford Falcon wagon with the straight 6 would be miles ahead of anything van shaped in terms of comfort, spare sparts(cheap), handling, power, people carrying ability, etc.

My 2 cents

I would drive an aus Falcon here if I could get one in LHD. Unfortunately yank Fords are gay and you can't get those.

A better solution would be to get rid of the family and any other encumbrances then get a nice motorcycle

How many Kids + Junk? Maybe a Grand Cherokee? Jeeps are reliable and easy to do work, and are not a total killer in the Gas Station.

Never had a problem with my GC starting. What Jeep did you have that had cold start problems?
