Title: Favorite hip hop album?
Post by: Rizzo in a box on September 06, 2014, 12:33:36 am
My all time favorite is Anticon's "Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop" (1999). First of all anticon is(was?) a fucking amazing collective of underground hip hop artists, a lot of whom are today finally getting attention. slug, sole, sage francis, etc. well anticon is where all that happened and this album still has some of the smartest, weirdest, most memorable hip hop songs I can think of.

Cage's Movies for the Blind, Haystak's The Natural, and Gang Starr's Moment of Truth. Biggie gets honorable mention. West coast hip hop is faggot bitch shit, along with 99% of rappers out there today, including Kendrick Lamar

Exmilitary - Death Grips.

Gotta admit, I love me some death grips but considering they started in what? 2010? and have been generally chasing edginess since they started. DG is great but the real of hiphop is a big field and I think putting death grips at the forefront thereof is to miss the jungle for the trees.

I don't listen much to rap, so I can't comment. I mostly like Death Grips because they are strongly musically orientated, like in terms of having actual musical progressions in their song rather than a repetitive sample to rant over.

Like every track on Government Plates was pretty minor variations one or two loops. GP is my favorite albums of theirs but I don't think "strong song progression" is really something we can count in its favor.

Exmilitary has some song progression, but really every release has become progressively more homogeneous (which I'm not convinced is a bad thing).

Raspberry Fields is my favorite track on the album.

Another vote for Deltron 3030. There's a bunch of stuff here I've never heard of, which is heartening.

I'm a fan of the Cunninlynguists' Strange Journey albums. Also... Hello Nasty.

I'll go as far as owning up to actually liking a few Hip-Hop songs, but a whole album... that's just too much of a stretch for even me.
