are there on going problems with the server because it is responding terribly slow whenever I try to do anything, also I don't really see how giving him ad space does anything more than proving his tactics work in getting him something he wants just doesn't seem like there's any reason for him to not just do it again once he feels like he got the most of his advertising here

The DDoS attack and its solution is not related to the spam/CP.  That is why the spam continued after the attacks stopped.

Why do I care? Because someone is posting child porn and DDoSing our site and got what he wanted. Is that not reason enough to care? What would I have done differently? Shut down registration as soon as more than one account was posting CP. Use the information mizled dug up and report his abuse. Install some security software that defends against DDoS attacks. Fight back by filling his site with single line shitposts and non information so he sees we wont take it sitting down.

But he was probably thinking about getting the site back up as quickly as possible. He says it's a short term solution, so I think he did the right thing for the time being.

I hear you guys.  I know you all are disappointed, as am I.  I just wanted to get the site back up as quickly as possible while we find other solutions.  As a moderator, there is not much else I can do, and even as admin I will admit my skills would be limited.  Do you all have any other suggestions for something we can implement that would fend off future attacks?  I sent some of the DDoS remedies suggested by our host to Arnox, and I would love to hear of any alternatives.

There is not that much you can do against a strong/well coordinated ddos attack, at least nothing that's easily implemented or for free.
Although I'm not that familiar with SMF Boards, there are certainly hacks that allow you to include better captchas so automated registration is harder to achieve. Another possibility would be to forbid posting IMG tags for users until a certain post count is reached, this would give you a larger window of opportunity to ban spammers before they can post CP. I'll do some research to help out in this matter

Actually, this was something I disagreed with doing HEAVILY but by the time I had learned what was going on, Idio had already spent a lot of his time negotiating with this turd for us and I didn't want to throw that all away. Especially when I respect Idio an awful lot. So, I let it happen, much to my chagrin.

Trust me guys. The only reason why I allow that stupid thread to stay stickied is out of respect for him and nothing else. So please, go easy on him. He doesn't really deserve to be involved in this mess in the first place. He should be busy enjoying his life instead of worrying about how this is going to get fixed.

To the admins:

Its your site, your rules, obviously you implement the tactics you think will get you through the day. But as someone that just got here, it j seems like you folded to a bully and have now agreed to give him your lunch money every day out of fear and worry. I'm the last person that understands any of the techy stuff behind any of this, I can barely download and attach pics to an email. But at the same time this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, as I don't know how to play the role of downtrodden victim....online or off.

I won't make any bold statements that I'm leaving over this, I just wish you took a more hardline stance towards a bully. What's that old line.."we don't negotiate with terrorists"? This wasn't a negotiation at all, instead just falling to their demands, and like so many have already said....its a bad precedent to set.

Then, get rid of that thread. I can't believe you guys not only let someone bully you into doing what they wanted, but caved so unbelievably easily. Like I said before, if you don't want to do anything about the people who posted those pictures that's fine. That's your choice and I can't say that I'm inclined to make a move to do anything myself, so I can't hold that against you.

However, what leaves me so aghast is the fact that you let these sick creeps do this - then, even worse - engaged them in dialogue followed by, need I say it again? EVEN WORSE - doing exactly what they fucking wanted.

why the fuck haven't you reported them to the authorities? FUCKING REPORT THEM. CP is FUCKING DISGUSTING AND HIGHLY ILLEGAL AND WRONG. Get their IP addresses. Get their emails. Get all the info you can on them and forward it on to people will look into it. File complaints. DO something.

Thank you all for your feedback.  Unlike several other communities, we listen to our people.  I have listened to what you have to say, come to my senses, removed the offending thread, and banned the offending user.  I'm not sure how long it will be before something, if anything, happens, but we will take that as it comes.  As stated before, this was solely my decision and I take full accountability for it.  Arnox was 100% against this decision, but he respected my wishes and allowed me to carry out this action.

I apologize for making a mockery of everything that we stand for.  I allowed complacency to cloud my judgment and made a poor decision that really effected this site and the community.  I hope I have not caused any irrepairable damage to the community.  I was going to renounce my own modship, but I would like to see this through to the end if you all will have me.  I will not quit on you if you don't quit on me.

I am impressed. Thanks for finally realizing what was best for your site, guys. For what it's worth, I appreciate that a lot. I will continue to post here, even though I never said that I wouldn't. It takes a big person to admit they're wrong and an even bigger person to take steps towards amending said wrong. I have nothing but respect for both of you, now.
