I Found It On The Web / New Site - RDFRN.com
« on: November 26, 2014, 02:44:14 am »
RDFRN.com is now open.

---

Greetings,

As you may have seen in this thread, there has been some discussion regarding a new site.

Over the last year, there have been several members of the legacy Totse, Totse2, Zoklet, and Sanctuary community who have been displaced.  To continue the ideas of free information, alternative thinking, and the pursuit of exploring and discussing anything and everything, a rebirth has been formed.

I am happy to announce that a new site has been launched - Raw Data for Raw Nerves (RDFRN) - http://www.rdfrn.com.  I encourage you to check it out and engage in discussions surrounding any variety of topics.

Everything is about ready, but due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the site will remain in construction until late this Thursday. Go enjoy some family time, turkey, and football. Or go enjoy some time passed out, extravagant indulgences, and irresponsible activities. Then come back and check us out at http://www.rdfrn.com.

Help & Suggestions / Should a new site be created by Idio?
« on: November 20, 2014, 08:44:38 pm »
Dear Folks,

Before I begin, please note that this is not an advertisement.  Arnox, the staff, and I have been having some discussions, and I would like to get some input from you all.  I have been thinking about starting a new site.  A totse3, of sorts.  That is my suggestion.

Some of this stemmed from posts of sentiments from our admin being open to an additional community1.  I also noticed some support from a few of you2, which helped propel my decision.

Although Arnox has offered to let me take over The Sanctuary3, a trust for which I am very thankful, I think it would best good to have a new site, a new chance, and a rebirth of a new beginning.  Arnox has done a great job in creating The Sanctuary, and he has put up with a lot of crap.  This move, if it were to happen, might displace a few people, but I feel that it is a chance to gain back many who have been lost.  We lost at least 90% of the totse2 userbase since it went down in October 2013.  The darkbb replacement was not good, though it was up until May 2014.  We seem to have lost a lot of the Zoklet refugees too.

In case you are wondering what I would do differently, I have scratched up a few points.  Of course I would be open to what you all thought, and some things would need to be done differently than before.
  • We would be using vBulletin.  With vBulletin, we would have content management. That means text-files, blogs, and possibly other add-ons.
  • Less over-moderating, and the rules would be a little different.  The over-modding part comes down to the banning.  There has been a lot of it lately, and there wouldn't necessarily be as much banning.
  • HB would be for whatever, as long as not CP or illegal stuff and it fit the site rules, and SG would be more serious discussion that doesn't fall in other forums. Other forums would be for serious discussion.
  • NIMF would remain NIMF. It's for things that don't belong. Threads would not be created there.
  • We would have more section mods, and less global mods. I would have to make sure we don't have too many mods for the needs.  It does sound conflicting to say less over-modding and more section mods, but here is my thinking.  With section mods on totse2, I basically told each mod to run their sections how they want, within the scope of the site rules and the description of the section.  We always say at work, "run it like you own it."  I laid out the site rules, and then allowed them to create their individual forum rules and sticky them.  If I didn't agree with a rule, then we would discuss it, but they ran the forum.  When people started doing things wrong or abusing their authority, they were de-modded.  It created a sense of ownership and accountability.
Most section mods just moved things around and kept things tidy, rather than banning and infracting.  After all, we want our users to come here and enjoy themselves, not worry about being kicked off the site.  With a different userbase, we might have to make some adjustments, but that's my general thinking.

Some of you may be put off by the name totse3.  I like it because we are basically emulating totse, and totse2 went down, so the name makes sense to me, but I'm not married to it.  Please vote on whether or not it would be good to have a new site.  If the name is lame, please suggest a new one.

The most important thing about any website like this is its community.  So this wouldn't be my site.  It would be our site.

If you guys feel you can make a better place for the community, that's actually fine and, believe it or not, I encourage it. It would in reality be nice to not have to admin and have to be the guy nobody likes.
Actually, believe it or not, I would approve if someone made another totse-like website which passes my inspection and the admin there is actually a good one and further, if the admin actually ASKED before he started advertising on my site. I would even be willing to resign and maybe even give control of this site over to them.
You want 'em? I'll give 'em to you for a bargain deal. And then you can be the one people will call faggot and curse because you may have moved their precious thread over to another sub-forum. Then again, I don't think I'd wish this fate upon my worst enemy.

Idio, if you would like to admin, you need only say. I'll give the site to you right now. It's yours if you want it.
Take the site Idio, it literally IS the only chance this community has. Until its taken from that incompetent fuckhead's hands, things will only get worse, more people will leave, the place with continue to be more irrelevant and pointless.
Come on Idio, do it for your country, do it for your people and do it...
For the memory of Zoklet and all who have been banned, arrested and made threads on how to make drugs!
Take it Idio', because I think you know the long term consequences for this site if you don't.
If it's only slight hesitation then fucking go for it. What's the worst that could happen? Getting made fun of by a bunch of low-lives on an internet forum?
So since both Arnox and Idio stopped posting entirely after this exchange, does this mean there is some....dare I say......Hope?

Is there discussion/negotiation going on behind the scenes?
Give us an update guys, inquiring minds want to know.....
Idio, I've been watching the comments of you and all the other mods very closely for several weeks in regard to a lot of the forum drama/policies....and I notice you especially choose your words very carefully so as not to upset the applecart.  And being one of the more rational/mature people around here, you HAVE to realize there are a few obvious and quick things you could do to bring back some credibility back to these boards......but you aren't talking about it publicly since you are trying to remain loyal to Arnox.

If you think the ship is going down any how, why not at least try to take over the wheel and right things......instead of just going down into the murky depths of the ocean?
1. take over
2. demod zek
3. ???
4. profit
idio, if you start totse3, I'm with you...
Well, I want my totse2 back but we can't have everything.

Technophiliacs & Technophiles / Windows detected a hard disk problem
« on: November 16, 2014, 01:02:11 am »
I'm trying to resolve some issues that my mother-in-law's laptop has been having.  Upon startup, before getting to the boot sequence, I'm seeing a black screen that says:

"SMART Hard Disk Error

The SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure.  To ensure no data loss, please backup the content immediately and run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.

Hard Disk 1 (301)

F2   System Diagnostics
ENTER - Continue Startup"

I continued startup and the operating system was mostly stable.  However, there was a popup that said:

"Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk." Then it gives me options to backup, or ask again later.

Looking up a couple things and thinking about it, it sounds like a physical problem rather than a virtual problem.  It said to back everything up and avoid using the computer before determining if it could be repaired or if it should be replaced, but she has the recovery disks and all that.

So I went to the hard drive properties and started a disk check - said it couldn't run while it's in use.  I had it start the disk check before booting and restarted the computer.  It's currently going through CHDSK, but things aren't looking good.

CHDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)
As of this post, while only 6% complete, file record segments are unreadable from segments 172,680 through 172,700 and counting out of 258,308 file records.

Does this mean she needs a new hard drive?  If so many segments are unreadable so early in the disk check, it doesn't sound like a reformat would help much.  If I get a new hard drive, will it be easy to get everything going using the recovery disks that were created from her PC?

I Found It On The Web / Would you pay $1/month to post off topic?
« on: November 05, 2014, 06:11:26 pm »
These guys would - offtopic.com.

"For about $1 per month, get access to the largest general discussion forum on the Internet."

And there's a lot of them.  We must be doing it wrong.

NIMF / NIMF posting guidelines
« on: November 05, 2014, 01:47:03 pm »
There aren't any, other than adhering to the Seven Deadly Sins of Sanctuary.

Just posting this here as a reminder for clarification:

B. NIMF has undergone metamorphosis into a sort of Chaos Realm for the site. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you set up your profile to ignore this board as anyone will now be able to post threads in it and NOT be infracted at all for doing any of the following in this forum:

- Posting incredibly long posts without any substantial content.
- Blatantly derailing a thread and going completely against the conversation flow or derailing with the purpose of harassing another user.
- Bumping a thread that is old without anything to add or contribute.
- Completely illegible or incoherent posts or threads.

Flooding may also be added to the list of exceptions but if so, topics there will get removed periodically about every week.

To ignore this board:
   1. Go to Profile > Summary. Then Modify Profile > Ignore Boards Options
   2. Then check the NIMF box and then hit "Change profile."
   3. ???
   4. PROFIT!!

Enjoy the sandbox.

Politics: Left, Right, and Center / Who to vote for - ISideWith.com
« on: November 04, 2014, 03:34:56 pm »
Having trouble figuring out who to vote for, if you still believe in voting?  I was looking around, and saw isidewith.com.  You choose your state, it asks you a series of questions, and then matches you up with the candidates.  Seems pretty straightforward to me, without all the BS and propaganda.

What do you think?  Is it legit?  Comprehensive enough?

Head Shrinkers / Sometimes I burn ants...
« on: October 25, 2014, 11:36:47 pm »
... and I like it.  Is that bad?  I only feel like burning them when they infest an area in my house and won't leave after I've asked nicely.  I don't always burn them.  I mainly use fire if I've already spent a long time cleaning them up and laying bait traps, and then I get fed up with it.

I've noticed the lighter being moved a couple times (because I'm somewhat OCD about certain things) and mentioned it to my wife.  I asked if she was lighting some candles or something, and she said "well..." and then trailed off.  Then I excitedly asked her if she was burning ants, and she said yes.  I said, "Me too!"  Then I said, "Well, at least we're both a little twisted in the same ways."

Cunning Linguists / "Are you busy?"
« on: October 22, 2014, 01:24:00 pm »
It’s one of those phrases that always makes me wait an extra beat before answering.  Sometimes people come up to me at work and ask, “Are you busy?” before engaging in the rest of the conversation.  I understand they are trying to be polite, but how do you answer this?  Unless you see me just sitting here twiddling my thumbs, then I typically find something to keep myself busy.

I suppose we should define the term “busy.”  Definitions from the Merriam-Webster dictionary include:

1   a :  engaged in action :  occupied
     b :  being in use <found the telephone busy>
2   :  full of activity :  bustling <a busy seaport>
3   :  foolishly or intrusively active :  meddling
4   :  full of distracting detail <a busy design>

Amusingly, they have the context example of this word, "Are you busy? Can I talk to you for a minute?"

If I am in a grumpy mood, sometimes I’ll say “Well, I am doing something, but what’s going on?”  If I want to just follow the social code, then I’ll say “Nope, what’s up?”  I guess for me, I would prefer the casual small-talk upon approach, such as “Hey Idio, how’s it going?” before getting down to business.  If there is no time for small-talk, then I might say something like, “Hey, do you have a moment?”  This takes the shift off of what the person is currently doing, to what they can do.

By asking someone if they are busy and expecting a “no” before moving on to the next order of business, you are putting someone in a difficult predicament.  If they say yes, they are busy, then they risk coming off as rude, but if they say no, then they are admitting to slacking off.

Then again, I’m probably just over-thinking it.  So tell me: are you busy?

Spurious Generalities / Is the staff complaint thread...
« on: October 20, 2014, 05:02:50 pm »
Leading the witness?  Would there be as many complaints against the staff if the thread topic were not highlighted and magnified at the top of every page?  For me personally, after every page I visit, I get a gentle reminder that I should go complain about the staff, even if I don't currently have a problem with them.

Is it a self-fulfilling prophecy?  We should experiment.  Display the link to half of the userbase and hide it from the other half.  Run a statistical analysis, maybe a multiple linear regression model with a bell-shaped curve, and let's see what we get.

Sex & Affection / Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day
« on: October 15, 2014, 06:21:21 pm »
Today, October 15th, is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is a day of remembrance for pregnancy loss and infant death, which includes but is not limited to miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, or the death of a newborn. It is observed annually in the United States and Canada and, in recent years, in the United Kingdom and in the Australian States of Western Australia and New South Wales, in Italy on behalf of a charity named Piccoli Angeli[1] on October 15.

The day is observed with remembrance ceremonies and candle-lighting vigils, concluding with the International Wave of Light, a worldwide lighting of candles at 7:00 p.m.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy_and_Infant_Loss_Remembrance_Day

A few may remember from totse2, my wife and I experienced two unsuccessful pregnancies in 2011.  I made a fairly large series of posts detailing our story on totse2, which I can share here if anyone is interested.  We now have a wonderful 2-year-old boy and we are expecting another boy in January, but these were some rough times for us.

My wife is currently 26 weeks pregnant.  A close friend of ours would have been 24 weeks pregnant this week.  She found out last week that she lost her baby somewhere between 20 weeks and 23 weeks.  What she recently had to experience, I wish on not even my worst enemy.

A lot of people don't understand what it is like to lose a child, whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, or death of a newborn.  For those who experience this, especially the mothers, the isolation can be deafening.  The feelings of guilt, helplessness, and misunderstanding can drive people to feel silenced.  I would like to break the silence today as we remember our angels that we could never hold or only held for a short time.

Another resource is http://www.october15th.com, but they are experiencing some interrupted service right now with peak traffic.

Season 5 premiere's tonight. Apparently AMC released the first 4 minutes as a sneak peak, but I'd rather wait until the full episode is airing. Should be epic.

Warning: this thread may contain spoilers.

Games People Play / What do you do with old video games?

Head Shrinkers / Help me help myself
« on: October 02, 2014, 11:35:25 pm »
We all have our faults.  It's time that I expose some of my real-life areas for improvement.  Any thoughts on how I can improve myself?  These are all things that I have both self-identified and that I've been told by others.

1) I over-analyze things.  Though I am an analyst by profession, I over-analyze everything.  It's annoying, even to me.
   a) I over-complicate things.  Related to number 1, but a little different.  I almost over-complicated this point with extra detail, like you wouldn't know what I meant.
2) I take things too personally.  This used to be that I would get defensive easily, but I have since cut back on the defensiveness.  But I still take some things personally.
   a) I also care too much about what others think about me, though I've cut down on this a lot.
3) I'm routinely 5 minutes late for work.  For some reason, I just can't get my butt out of bed.

Thanks for taking the time.  Of course there are a ton of other opportunity areas where I could make myself a better person, but these stick out in my mind at the moment.  Feel free to post your own ailments that you would like to have help with improving.

Help & Suggestions / Suggestion: remove Half Baked from Recent Topics
« on: September 18, 2014, 05:35:55 pm »
As we have been discussing post quality and shitposting, a lot of the discussion starts with how the recent topics section looks.  Right now, it is cluttered and a lot of useful threads get buried.

Since SG and HB both show up in the recent topics, I rarely move things because more people go off of the recent topics block than they do browse the specific forums.  However, I suggest we remove the HB forum from showing up at all in the recent topics, much like bat country did not show up in the Zoklet recent topics.

I would start moving a lot more threads to HB, namely from SG and BLTC.  However, HB still adheres to site-wide rules and would not simply be a trash can.  Several threads might become NIMF'd.  Furthermore, I haven't tested it, but we should never have a NIMF thread displayed in the recent topics section.

Thoughts?

Spurious Generalities / Would you rather...
« on: September 14, 2014, 05:17:39 pm »
Pick what you would rather do, and then propose a new "would you rather" for the next person.

Would you rather have your grandmother walk in on you having sex, or you walk in on your grandmother having sex?
